Jan or non-Jan

The resolution said that while other candidates in the fray in Hisar gave their assurance on backing the Jan Lokpal Bill, the Congress, which, as a ruling party, was in a position to get it passed in Parliament, did not.

The above is quoted from an article in The Hindu of October 30, 2011. The resolution is the outcome of the meeting of Team Anna on October 29, 2011. There are enough points on which one could feel comfortable or not, but this post is going to be focused on one small issue that is likely to be brushed under the carpet.

All candidates other than the Congress candidate in the Hisar by-election gave assurances on backing the Jan Lokpal Bill. Team Anna seems to be asking why the Congress candidate didn’t give such an assurance.

My simplistic response is this. The other candidates had nothing riding on their assurances, because they cannot carry the vote for or against the Jan Lokpal Bill. Taking the quote in the newspaper to be correct, the other candidates have committed themselves to the Jan Lokpal Bill. How can the Congress candidate, with his party in a position to get a strong Lokpal bill passed in the Parliament, give such a specific assurance, passing the Jan Lokpal Bill? His party's commitment is well known. It is a different matter that it could very well be a cynical concession, a temporary measure. That is it. It is for the Parliament to decide whether it would be Jan or not Jan.

The above is not nit picking. The Times of India says the following:

The meeting was of the view that lakhs of volunteers and along with the core committee members have played a significant role in the movement and there was no question of dismantling the committee.

Note the sentence construction here. What was the need to bring in “lakhs of volunteers” when the issue is about the "core committee", about 100 strong? Will you be dismantling the volunteers, whatever that may mean? Had anyone said that the core committee had not played a significant role? Team Anna is trying to legitimize the core committee through the numbers game, by the numbers of volunteers. If you play such games, it is only fair that the Jan part of the resolution can be picked on.

As an aside and assuming that the Jan Lokpal bill will be enacted, will the law be called Jan Lokpal Law? If yes, what about all the other laws that do not have Jan as a prefix? Are they non-Jan?

May be they are nonsense!

Anything backed by Anna becomes a law by itself, maybe he could put some sense into his supporters about civic sense but that would mean questioning his support sense. Anything which does not have Jan as a prefix is antigen oops is anti-jan

I do not like the terrible attitude of kiran and the sly arrogance of kejriwal..
They want to become power centers for dictating the course of our nation."The holier than thou" and "we are angels band thinkers for the nations good" attitude is terribly irritating..let them not talk for the rest.

DS sir, as I said in my most recent post, they are angels with horns on their heads! They talk only for themselves and people have been taken in by their con act. Hazare himself is no saint, of course.
